If you’ve ever had a crown made the traditional way, you know the drill. Pun intended.
You come in with a cracked or broken tooth. Your dentist numbs you up, grinds the tooth down, takes a goopy impression, and sends it off to a lab. Then you sit in the chair while they build a temporary acrylic crown. You leave with a tooth that feels bulky, looks slightly off, and comes with a list of foods you’re not supposed to eat for the next two weeks.
Then you come back two weeks later, get numbed again, and have the temporary pried off so the permanent crown can be cemented in. For a lot of patients, the dread of that whole process is enough to make them put off treatment entirely, even when a tooth is broken and getting worse.
Same-day crowns in Carpentersville change that. Not just the timeline, but the entire experience. Here’s what’s actually different, and why it matters.

What a Same-Day Crown Actually Is
A same-day crown is sometimes called a chairside crown or a CEREC crown. It’s a permanent crown that’s designed, milled, and placed in your mouth during a single appointment.
Instead of taking a physical impression and sending it to a lab, your dentist uses a digital scanner to capture a 3D image of your tooth. That scan feeds into design software, and you can watch the crown mill on-site from a block of ceramic material while you wait. Then we fit and bond it before you leave.
At Advanced Laser & Cosmetic Dentistry, we use on-site milling technology at both our Crystal Lake and Carpentersville locations. That means a patient in Carpentersville doesn’t have to drive to Crystal Lake for a same-day crown, and a patient in Crystal Lake doesn’t have to drive to Carpentersville. The technology is at both offices.
The Part Patients Dread Most: The Temporary
The temporary crown is where most of the frustration lives. Dentists make temporaries quickly from acrylic, and they don’t fit as well as the final crown. They can feel bulky, slightly loose, and can break if you bite down wrong. They can pop off while you’re eating something sticky, and then you have to call your dentist in an emergency to get it re-cemented.
You’re supposed to be careful with them for two weeks. No hard foods, no sticky foods, no chewing on that side. For some patients, that means avoiding everything they actually want to eat for two weeks.
A same-day crown eliminates the temporary entirely. You walk in with a compromised tooth, and you walk out with a permanent crown. There’s no acrylic shell, no two-week waiting period, and no “be careful with this” list of foods.
That’s not a small difference. For patients who’ve had a temporary crown break or pop off in the past, it’s the reason they’re willing to try same-day.
What the Appointment Actually Looks Like
Here’s what the visit looks like at our Carpentersville dental practice:
- The Exam and Imaging: We start by evaluating the tooth and taking digital X-rays. If the tooth needs a crown, we confirm that and talk through the options.
- The Digital Scan: Instead of a goopy impression tray, we use a digital scanner to capture your tooth’s shape. It takes a few minutes, and there’s no gagging, no mess, and no waiting for material to set.
- The Design: The scan feeds into software that designs the crown. Dr. Herbert Jun or Dr. Jay Colucci reviews the design, adjusts the fit and bite as needed, and sends it to the milling machine.
- The Milling: We mill the crown on-site from a ceramic block. This takes about 15-20 minutes.
- The Fitting and Bonding: We try the crown on, check the fit and bite, and bond it in place. We make any final adjustments and send you home with a permanent restoration.
The whole appointment usually takes a couple of hours, depending on the case. That’s a couple of hours, not two visits spread across two weeks.
Is a Same-Day Crown as Strong as a Lab-Made One?
This is the question patients ask most, and the short answer is yes. Modern chairside milling machines use high-quality ceramic materials comparable to those labs use. The crowns are durable, look natural, and withstand normal chewing forces.
There’s also a fit advantage that doesn’t get enough attention. When a lab makes a crown, the technician works from an impression or scan taken in your mouth, but they don’t see your mouth. They design a crown to fit a digital model, and if the scan misses a detail or the model is slightly off, they may need to adjust the crown when it comes back.
With a same-day crown, the design and milling happen in the same building, and the dentist who designs the crown is the one who fits it. If something needs adjusting, they adjust it before you leave. That tighter feedback loop often produces a better fit than a lab-made crown that has to be sent back for a remake.
Dr. Jun completed his AEGD residency at NYU Langone Health, where he received advanced training in complex restorative procedures. Dr. Colucci has completed continuing education in laser dentistry and 3D printing, which directly supports the digital workflow that makes same-day crowns possible. Both dentists are trained to evaluate whether a same-day crown is right for your tooth.
Which Teeth Qualify
Not every tooth can get a same-day crown. The technology works best for:
- Back teeth (molars and premolars) that need full coverage
- Teeth that have had root canals and need protection
- Teeth with large fillings that are failing
- Teeth that are cracked or fractured but still salvageable
Front teeth can sometimes be restored with same-day crowns, but esthetic cases often require more customization. If your case is complex, we’ll tell you, and we’ll recommend the approach that gives you the best result.
The Part Nobody Mentions: What You Avoid
Same-day crowns save you a few things, such as:
- You avoid the numbing twice. Traditional crowns mean getting numbed for the prep and again for the final cementation. That’s two rounds of injections. With same-day, it’s one.
- You avoid the “what if it doesn’t fit” anxiety. If a lab-made crown comes back and doesn’t fit, you’re back in the chair to have it adjusted or remade. With a same-day crown, if the fit isn’t right, we correct it before you leave.
- You avoid the gap in your schedule. Two appointments mean two blocks of time off work, two commutes, two rounds of arranging childcare or coverage. One appointment means one.
- You avoid the temporary crown falling off at the worst moment. If you’ve ever had a temporary crown pop off during a work meeting or a dinner out, you know exactly why this matters.
What to Expect After
Same-day crowns don’t require special aftercare, but a few things are worth knowing. You can eat normally right away, though we recommend avoiding very hard foods (ice, hard candy) on any restored tooth, whether it’s a same-day crown or a lab-made one. You can brush and floss normally, but be gentle around the gumline for the first day or two.
Some patients have mild sensitivity to hot or cold after the crown is placed, especially if the tooth was irritated before treatment. That usually fades within a few days. If it doesn’t, call us.
You should also expect the crown to feel slightly different from your natural tooth for a few days while your bite adjusts. If it feels high or uneven, call us. A quick adjustment usually solves it.
Why This Matters for Carpentersville Patients
If you live in Carpentersville, Dundee, Elgin, Algonquin, or anywhere in Kane County, you can get same-day crowns right here at 2429 Randall Road. You don’t have to drive to a specialist or wait two weeks for a lab.
Dr. Jun and Dr. Colucci both practice at our Carpentersville location and are trained to evaluate whether a same-day crown is right for your tooth. If it isn’t, they’ll explain why and recommend the approach that gives you the best long-term result.
If you’ve been putting off a crown because you dread the temporary, the second appointment, or the two-week wait, call us at (224) 701-3052 or request an appointment online. We’ll review your case, explain your options, and tell you whether a same-day crown is a good fit. In many cases, you can walk out with a permanent crown the same day you walk in.
