What a Permanent Crown in One Visit Actually Feels Like

If you’ve had a crown before, you remember the temporary. The bulky acrylic shell, the list of foods you couldn’t eat, the moment it popped off mid-dinner, and the second appointment two weeks later to swap it out. If you haven’t had a crown before, you’ve probably heard about that experience from someone who has.

Same-day crowns change that experience from start to finish. Not just the timeline, but how the appointment actually feels. Here’s what it’s really like, step by step, at our Crystal Lake dental office.

What a Permanent Crown in One Visit Actually Feels Like

Before You Come In

Let’s start with what the website doesn’t say. Most patients walk in with a mix of nerves and curiosity. They’ve read that same-day crowns exist, but they’re not sure the technology is as good as the traditional method, or that the appointment will feel rushed.

The short answer is no, it doesn’t feel rushed. The longer answer is what the rest of this post is about.

You’ll come in for a consultation or an exam, and we’ll evaluate the tooth. Sometimes the tooth is clearly cracked or broken. Sometimes it’s a tooth with a large filling that’s been in place for years, and the filling is starting to fail. In each case, we take digital X-rays and carefully examine the tooth before deciding whether a crown is the right treatment.

If it is, we’ll explain the same-day option and answer your questions. You don’t have to decide on the spot. If you decide to move forward, we can do the crown that same day.

Step One: Numbing (Once, Not Twice)

The first thing you’ll notice is that you get numbed once. That might sound small, but if you’ve had traditional crowns, you know it’s not.

Traditional crowns mean numbing for the prep appointment and numbing again for the final cementation. That’s two rounds of injections, two rounds of that heavy feeling in your lip and cheek, and two rounds of not being able to eat comfortably for a few hours afterward.

With a same-day crown, you get numbed once, and that’s it. The whole procedure, from prep to final bonding, happens in one visit.

Dr. Herbert Jun and Dr. Jay Colucci both use gentle numbing techniques, and if you’re anxious about injections, they’ll talk you through it. Dr. Colucci’s philosophy is that his dental chair is a judgment-free zone. If needles make you nervous, say so. It’s easy to work around.

Step Two: The Digital Scan (No Goop)

Once you’re comfortable, we prepare the tooth. That means removing a small amount of tooth structure so the crown can fit over it. Then we take a digital scan.

If you’ve had traditional impressions, you know the goopy tray. It’s cold, it’s messy, and for some patients it triggers a gag reflex. The digital scanner avoids all of that. It’s a small handheld device that glides over your tooth and captures a 3D image in a few minutes.

If you’re curious, you can watch the scan on the screen. A lot of patients find it interesting to see their own tooth in 3D. It’s a small moment of “oh, that’s what’s going on in there.”

Step Three: The Design

The scan feeds into software that designs the crown. The design is based on your tooth, your bite, and the surrounding teeth. Dr. Jun or Dr. Colucci reviews the design, adjusts it as needed, and approves it for milling.

This is where the training matters. Designing a crown means making it fit your bite, avoiding interference with the opposing teeth, and looking natural. Dr. Jun completed his AEGD residency at NYU Langone Health, where he received advanced training in complex restorative procedures. Dr. Colucci has completed continuing education in laser dentistry and 3D printing, which directly supports the digital workflow that makes same-day crowns possible.

If something in the design looks off, they adjust it before it goes to the mill. Traditional crowns don’t offer that level of control.

Step Four: The Milling

The design goes to the on-site milling machine, which carves the crown from a block of ceramic. This takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Most patients use this time to relax, read, scroll on their phones, or chat with the team. It’s not a stressful part of the appointment, and you won’t be sitting there in discomfort. You’re just waiting while the machine does its work.

The milling machine can be loud sometimes. It’s not unpleasant, but it’s noticeable. If you’re sensitive to noise, bring headphones. We don’t mind.

Step Five: The Fit

Once we mill the crown, we try it on. This is where the same-day process really shows its advantage. We check the crown for fit, against the opposing teeth, and for appearance.

If something needs adjusting, they adjust it right there. The dentist who designed the crown is the dentist fitting it, so there’s no back-and-forth with a lab. No “let’s send it back and wait two weeks for a remake.” The adjustments happen while you’re in the chair.

That’s a big deal for fit quality. Traditional crowns sometimes come back from the lab slightly off, and the dentist has to adjust them chairside. Same-day crowns skip that step entirely because the design and the milling happen in the same building.

Step Six: The Bonding

Once the fit is right, we bond the crown in place. That’s the final step. You leave with a permanent crown, period. You don’t have to worry about a temporary, a second appointment, and a two-week wait.

You can eat normally right away, though we recommend avoiding very hard foods (ice, hard candy) on any restored tooth. You can brush and floss normally. If you feel any sensitivity in the first few days, that’s normal and usually fades. If it doesn’t, call us.

What Patients Actually Say

The feedback we get most often about same-day crowns is some version of “that was easier than I expected.”

Patients who’ve had traditional crowns say the difference is striking. No temporary, no second appointment, no “be careful with that side of your mouth for two weeks” list. Just one visit and you’re done.

Patients who’ve never had a crown say they didn’t realize how much of the traditional process was just waiting. The same-day version feels more like a single task than a multi-week project.

Some patients are surprised by how normal the crown feels right away. There’s a slight adjustment period while your bite settles, but most patients say it feels like their own tooth within a few days.

Is a Same-Day Crown Right for You?

Same-day crowns work well for most back teeth, including molars and premolars. They’re also a good option for teeth that have had root canals and need protection.

They may not be the right choice for every case. Front teeth sometimes need more customization for esthetics. Very complex cases may need a different approach. If a same-day crown isn’t right for your tooth, we’ll tell you, and we’ll explain why.
